.
The Italians' plan was crude but simple: dig a tunnel to bring a large amount explosives under the Austrian troops who controlled the summit - Lagazuoi Piccolo - and blow them up. For 3 years both sides were engaged in digging tunnels, trenches, and trying to blow each other up with mines.
.
Today: The barracks, trenches, and the tunnel system has been renovated and is now open to hikers/visitors as some sort of an open air museum. .
You can hike or take a cable car to the summit, and walk the tunnels all the way back down the mountain. Even in the middle of the summer, the tunnels were damp and cold and I was shivering throughout. It's hard to imagine what they must have been like in the middle of the winter.

I pushed back some international travels because I I pushed back some international travels because I realised that in the summer, there's nowhere I'd rather be than the mountain ranges of Western states, and that includes Colorado my home state. I can't help but catching 14er fever too even though I like peaks of all kinds and heights. I simply can't wait for more car camping, miles of dirt road, long days exploring, followed by cold beer.
It was almost zero visibility and -23F wind chill. It was almost zero visibility and -23F wind chill. Your balaclava is caked in frosted breath and it hurts to breathe. You're going fast, faster than you should maybe (then again it's hard to tell when you can't see far). Your ski catches an edge on a hidden bump. And you flail. You're convinced you're going to eat it. For sure. You brace for the tumble, for the pain. And yet... a fortuitous gust of wind. Or something. You get your balance back. You whoop under your breath - you're not the kind of person who whoops out loud. For that short split second you feel... invincible.
Hope you're finding joy, wherever you are.

I'm excited to go back to Europe this summer for some hiking and climbing. We've done this 5 years in a row I guess we can call it a yearly tradition now. I've hiked in the Swiss Alps, Los Picos, the Pyrenees, Julian Alps, and the Tatras, but this June I'm going somewhere that I've been dreaming about for a loooong time: the mighty Italian Dolomites. I think it's going to be pretty amazing.
.
So if you have any trail or via ferratas recommendations, I'd love to hear it!
I just came back from 3 weeks in the Dolomites 🇮🇹. I'm a little sun burned and completely smitten! It's one of the best trips I've had. For an outdoor lover like me the options are limitless: climbing, mountain biking, via Ferrata, trekking, paragliding... I can keep going on. I have so much to share.
.
In the meantime, the picture is from the Brenta group, one of the 9 ranges that form the Dolomites UNESCO site and also the biggest. We were on the way to Rifugio Brentei, a 3 hour walk from the town of Madonna di Campiglio. But it took us longer because we kept getting distracted by the view 😄
.
Have you been to the Dolomites?
