People would stop me on the street. "Where are you People would stop me on the street. "Where are you from?" It doesn't matter if I answer Indonesia or America the response is the same, "Welcome to Iran. I hope you enjoy my country," with a smile and a hand on their heart. It's so touching I think I'm going to start doing it to tourists I see back home 😊. It might confuse them a bit but I hope it will brighten their day the way it always does mine.

.
The Italians' plan was crude but simple: dig a tunnel to bring a large amount explosives under the Austrian troops who controlled the summit - Lagazuoi Piccolo - and blow them up. For 3 years both sides were engaged in digging tunnels, trenches, and trying to blow each other up with mines.
.
Today: The barracks, trenches, and the tunnel system has been renovated and is now open to hikers/visitors as some sort of an open air museum. .
You can hike or take a cable car to the summit, and walk the tunnels all the way back down the mountain. Even in the middle of the summer, the tunnels were damp and cold and I was shivering throughout. It's hard to imagine what they must have been like in the middle of the winter.

I love this town. It's built on such a steep slope that one house's roof is used as the courtyard of the house above. .
It's not on a lot of Western tourists itinerary even though it's quite popular among wealthy urbanites from Tehran. Especially in the summer when it's boiling hot in the lowland and everyone wants to escape to the mountajns.
.
It's green and often foggy, and totally unlike what you might think of Iran.

Throwback to the last trip I took before the pande Throwback to the last trip I took before the pandemic in early 2020. Europe was just starting to lockdown (my RyanAir flight from Amman to Bologna had 5 people on it), while the US was still trying to figure out what was going on.
I thought of my trip to Jordan as realization dawned on me as my trip (to Indonesia) is ending: I went through quarantine, the multiple PCR/antigen tests, the performative temperature checks, the endless barcode scannings, and now the prospect of a 40 hrs trip where mask is required.
Travel feels so different now it's getting harder to remember how it used to be.
(Btw, Jordan was kind of amazing and Petra exceeded my expectations.)
Next: The Dolomites. Have you been? If so, I need Next: The Dolomites. Have you been? If so, I need recommendations!
.
I'm excited to go back to Europe this summer for some hiking and climbing. We've done this 5 years in a row I guess we can call it a yearly tradition now. I've hiked in the Swiss Alps, Los Picos, the Pyrenees, Julian Alps, and the Tatras, but this June I'm going somewhere that I've been dreaming about for a loooong time: the mighty Italian Dolomites. I think it's going to be pretty amazing.
.
So if you have any trail or via ferratas recommendations, I'd love to hear it!
We've been taking advantage of what so far has bee We've been taking advantage of what so far has been a pretty mild winter in CO. Our first CO summits: Sniktau and Cupid, both 13ers but pretty mellow as far as summit goes 😊 - pretty lucky with the weather too.
Raja Ampat in Indonesia. Last international vacati Raja Ampat in Indonesia. Last international vacation we took before Covid. If I had known, would I have done things differently? Stay longer? Travel slower?
I put off writing about the trip because... well *look around vaguely at the everything* but finally, you can read about this most amazing place on jacknjilltravel.com.
If you're starting to dream of your very first post-vaccination, post-Covid trip, check it out. Link in bio.
I just came back from 3 weeks in the Dolomites 🇮🇹. I'm a little sun burned and completely smitten! It's one of the best trips I've had. For an outdoor lover like me the options are limitless: climbing, mountain biking, via Ferrata, trekking, paragliding... I can keep going on. I have so much to share.
.
In the meantime, the picture is from the Brenta group, one of the 9 ranges that form the Dolomites UNESCO site and also the biggest. We were on the way to Rifugio Brentei, a 3 hour walk from the town of Madonna di Campiglio. But it took us longer because we kept getting distracted by the view 😄
.
Have you been to the Dolomites?
