Packing tonight for Italy and I'm so excited to be Packing tonight for Italy and I'm so excited to be back! I'll be exploring a new part of the country: the beautiful Trentino in Italian Dolomites. Italy is one of the few countries I can keep going back again and again because the region is so varied, the food agrees with my palette, the wine is a plenty, the coffee is strong, and there are often cheap flights :) even from all the way here in California.

I'm currently standing at Lagazuoi summit, above t I'm currently standing at Lagazuoi summit, above the entrance to a tunnel system dating back to WW1. This was the frontline the war and the beautiful area bears witness to some of the most brutal mountain warfare of the era.
.
The Italians' plan was crude but simple: dig a tunnel to bring a large amount explosives under the Austrian troops who controlled the summit - Lagazuoi Piccolo - and blow them up. For 3 years both sides were engaged in digging tunnels, trenches, and trying to blow each other up with mines.
.
Today: The barracks, trenches, and the tunnel system has been renovated and is now open to hikers/visitors as some sort of an open air museum. .
You can hike or take a cable car to the summit, and walk the tunnels all the way back down the mountain. Even in the middle of the summer, the tunnels were damp and cold and I was shivering throughout. It's hard to imagine what they must have been like in the middle of the winter.

We've been taking advantage of what so far has bee We've been taking advantage of what so far has been a pretty mild winter in CO. Our first CO summits: Sniktau and Cupid, both 13ers but pretty mellow as far as summit goes 😊 - pretty lucky with the weather too.
It was almost zero visibility and -23F wind chill. It was almost zero visibility and -23F wind chill. Your balaclava is caked in frosted breath and it hurts to breathe. You're going fast, faster than you should maybe (then again it's hard to tell when you can't see far). Your ski catches an edge on a hidden bump. And you flail. You're convinced you're going to eat it. For sure. You brace for the tumble, for the pain. And yet... a fortuitous gust of wind. Or something. You get your balance back. You whoop under your breath - you're not the kind of person who whoops out loud. For that short split second you feel... invincible.
Hope you're finding joy, wherever you are.
I just finished writing about all the adventurous I just finished writing about all the adventurous things we did during our 3 weeks in the Dolomites (link in profile) and how you can visit as well. I wish we had more time because there's so much to do. We climbed, hiked every day, went mountain biking (which I think is quickly becoming my second love after climbing), chased waterfalls, went paragliding, via ferrata-ing! .
And if I had known how accessible the Dolomites is, I'd have visited sooner. You can take a train from Milan or Venice and a few hours later you'll be among the stunning peaks of the Dolomites.

Raja Ampat in Indonesia. Last international vacati Raja Ampat in Indonesia. Last international vacation we took before Covid. If I had known, would I have done things differently? Stay longer? Travel slower?
I put off writing about the trip because... well *look around vaguely at the everything* but finally, you can read about this most amazing place on jacknjilltravel.com.
If you're starting to dream of your very first post-vaccination, post-Covid trip, check it out. Link in bio.
Rooftop frolicking in Kashan, Iran. . The owner of Rooftop frolicking in Kashan, Iran. .
The owner of the guesthouse we stayed in Kashan asked me where I'm from (despite him literally holding my US passport). But I knew what he was really asking so I told him that I was born in Jakarta, Indonesia. .
He started laughing, and more alarmingly... he started to unbutton his shirt. One button after another.
.
I was like "Whaaaat are you doing ?!"
.
Turned out that he wanted me to see the t-shirt he was wearing underneath. Superman style, he showed me a t-shirt that says "I love Jakarta" complete with a Garuda (Indonesia's national eagle-bird emblem thingy) and all that.
.
It's a souvenir he got when he was in Jakarta a month before.
.
Now, what is the chance of that?! He was so tickled that he called me "Jakarta" all throughout our stay.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact of my I’ve been thinking a lot about the impact of my travels on the environment, especially from the flights I take.
.
Flights are really bad for the environment (I knew this but just recently learned how bad)
.
Not only the emission but think of the waste produced on each flight (food wrapper, utensils, plastic cups, etc)
.
The easiest solution seems to be through a carbon offset initiative.
.
But is it effective? Or is it a permission to fly guilt-free?
.
If anybody got resources to point me to (books, articles, etc) - I’m all ears 👂
